Is it possible to get a teacher reinstated?

An outstanding math teacher was recently fired at my high school due to the school's financial reasons. However, the school belongs to one of the richest districts in the nearby area or even state and has recently taken on a huge renovation. A friend and I would like to petition against his release. How many signatures would we need? There are roughly 2,000 students in the school. Is it possible? Thanks!
